Recipe: Tuna Spaghetti

I don't know why I have not posted this recipe sooner, given that this is my signature dish after all. I have been cooking up variations of this since my college and review days. In fact, back when we were reviewing for our Board Exam, my housemates and I used to have what we called Spaghetti Thursdays. That is, I cook my special Tuna Spaghetti every Thursday night for dinner. It just varies in plainness or richness, depending upon our budget. If we're a bit short on cash, it's just a basic tuna, pasta and sauce affair. If budget allows, we go all out with cream and hotdogs and mushrooms and what-have-you added to the basic recipe. Damn, I miss those review days.. *nostalgic* But I digress. I'm sharing with you now my basic recipe. Oh, and pardon the unattractive presentation of the pasta.

Tuna Spaghetti

What I used:

  • 1 175g Del Monte Spaghetti Merienda Pack
  • 1 250g pouch Del Monte Sweet Style Spaghetti Sauce
  • 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and sliced
  • 1 small onion, peeled and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 1 180g can Century Tuna flakes in oil
  • 1/3 cup grated cheese or cheese spread
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • dash of vetsin
  • 3-5 drops of hot sauce (optional)

What I did:

  1. Cook the pasta according to package directions.
  2. Heat the cooking oil together with the oil from the tuna.
  3. Saute the onion, garlic and tuna flakes.
  4. Add the spaghetti sauce, cheese, soy sauce and sugar. Season with salt and vetsin according to your taste. Add hot sauce if desired.
  5. Stir until the the cheese has melted and everything is evenly mixed. Let it simmer in low to medium heat until it boils.
  6. Add the cooked pasta and stir until every strand is covered in sauce.
  7. Top with more grated cheese if desired. Serve and enjoy.

Some notes:

  • Yields 3-4 servings.
  • You can substitute tuna chunks, solid tuna or corned tuna for the flakes in oil.
  • I often add sliced sausages for variety.
  • You may opt to increase the amount of cheese in the sauce or add cream to make the sauce creamier.

    1. Uhm, try macro focusing next time maybe? ;) But I'm sure your tuna spag tasted good despite the not-so-stellar shot. FYI, the photo above was just taken with my smartphone and edited to within an inch of its life in Photoshop to make it look even post-able. :P

  5. This looks delish! I like cooking pasta too, although I usually use Italian-style sauce or crushed tomatoes for my tomato-based pasta dishes :) Btw, I didn't know soy sauce can actually be added to spaghetti. Matry nga! Thanks for sharing this sis :)

    1. Thanks Sumi! I have tried using canned tomatoes to make the sauce just once. And ended up adding, like, a ton of sugar to get rid of the sour taste. Lol.

  6. Looks easy to prepare. I usually do mine without the tomato sauce and vetsin. I will try this next time.
